A Look At Hell

This sermon is a look at what hell is like and how to avoid it.

A Look at Hell
Matthew 13:47- 51

Do you believe there is a hell as well as a heaven? There is!

I. Hell Involves Emotional Anguish

Gehenna was a valley outside Jerusalem where garbage was thrown during the day city and burned at night.

Stuff in the dump is considered useless, irredeemable, and beyond repair.

The Bible uses “gehenna” interchangeably with hell.

"In hell, there will be gnashing of teeth." Matthew 13:42

II. Hell Involves Physical Anguish.

Hell’s fire and flames cause persistent, suffocating, tormenting heat.

The rich man asks Lazarus for a single drop of water.

III. Hell Involves Relational Anguish.

Hell will be filled with people demolished by emotional and physical agony.

Likely the only relational thought is to plead for someone to warn loved ones to not follow them.

IV. Hell Involves Spiritual Anguish

Today the ungodly, hard-hearted, and insensitive sinners benefit from living where God's grace shines.

God’s mercy holds back the tide of evil Satan would love to inflict on this world.

In hell God doesn't intervene, a reign of spiritual terror that words cannot describe is unleashed.

  • There is "Utter darkness," the morning never comes.

  • There is "The bottomless pit,” you’re going the wrong direction and you can’t go back.

To end up in hell the ultimate crime is to reject the person and work of Jesus Christ.

"How much more severely do you think a man deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God under foot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified him, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace?" Hebrews 10:29 NIV

CONCLUSION: Should you end up in hell don't blame God.

  • To the unbelievers, I plead with you to ask Jesus and trust him for forgiveness and love.

  • To you believers, rejoice that you are spared from an awful hell. It is not in your future.

  • To the church, humanity is moving toward the afterlife. God has ordained us to be a rescue operation, an information center to get out the word.

Church is not a country club where you come to socialize, pay dues, and leave.

Hell is out there but the cross is here.

You have a lot of courage - act on it.
