Getting Out of Our Comfort Zone

 Acts 8:26 - 40

Jesus told His disciples to be witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

They were having a great time in Jerusalem sharing Jesus, worshipping together, studying God’s word together, and having potluck dinners and forgot the mission.

God broke up this holy huddle by allowing persecution.

We can be so wrapped up in good activities that we forget the primary mission to make disciples.

I. At Times God Calls us into the Desert

Jesus said, Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also. John 15:20 KJV

God sometimes leads us to the desert because…

  • He has something for us to do there.
  • We need to grow spiritually, to mature our character to reflect more closely God.
  • We need to trust God more rather than our comfort zone, friends, or family.

A. We Don’t Choose To Enter Some Deserts

And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. Rom 8:28 KJV

B. We Choose To Enter Some Deserts

God may lead us to a new place, or person we may not have chosen for ourselves.

Because of our unwilling to leave our comfort zone and trust God in the new place we miss God’s blessing.

II. Our Duty Is To Follow Him

We must know when the Spirit is leading, guiding, prompting, nudging, pushing us in a direction.

The challenge is to be ready to get out of our comfort zone to follow the Spirit - faith is more than words.

Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ, for which I am in chains. Pray that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should. Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone. Col. 4:2 – 6 NIV

It is possible to be so programmed that we lose sight of the meaning behind what we are doing.

Our mission has eternal consequences we must never lose a sense of urgency about it.

What an awful things if people miss heaven because we refused to tune into God’s Spirit.

What is the Spirit leading you to do?
