WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A MOTHER
MOTHER’S DAY 2010
WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A MOTHER
Exodus 2:1–10
Being a mother or a father requires decisions that are risky and heart-wrenching that requires faith.
Jochebed was a mother with faith and the mother of Moses.
“… the name of Amram's wife was Jochebed, a descendant of Levi, who was born to the Levites in Egypt . To Amram she bore Aaron, Moses and their sister Miriam.” Numbers 26:59 NIV
Because Israel had become a threat to the reigning Pharaoh, he commanded the Hebrew midwives to throw their newborn sons into the Nile to die.
Jochebed did what she could to save her child and then depended totally on the faithfulness of God.
I. Jochebed Had A Courageous Faith.
"By faith Moses' parents hid him for three months after he was born, because they saw he was no ordinary child, and they were not afraid of the king's edict." Hebrews 11:23 NIV
We often think of faith as passive, but real faith is active and willing to take risks.
II. Jochebed Had A Sensible Faith.
After three months of hiding her baby, she made a wicker basket, covered it with tar and pitch to make it float, and put it in the reeds on the banks of the Nile .
The sensibility required of a mother is consequential.
III. Jochebed's Courageous, Sensible Faith Was Rewarded.
Jochebed not only raised her child, but was paid for her work!
There are things mothers can do, but ultimately they have to leave it in God's hands.
An interviewer asks a full-time mom, "And what is it that you do, my dear?" She responded,
"I am socializing two homosapiens into the dominant values of the Judeo-Christian tradition, in order that they might be instruments for the transformation of the social order into the kind of eschatological utopia that God willed from the beginning of creation."
She then added, "And what do you do?"
Moms, you have a very important part, but don’t worry it's not all up to you! God is your partner.
