I Know Your Name
Ignite: Be All That You Can Be (Series 3)
I KNOW YOUR NAME
Exodus 33:7 - 14
“…I know you by name and you have found favor with me.' Exodus 33:12b
I. Moses the Reluctant Leader
Standing before the most powerful person in the world Moses said, “Let my people go!”
Israel saw God do amazing miracles as He provided food and water in the middle of the barren desert.
Because of their sin of idolatry God pulled back from leading them directly and assigns an angel to lead them.
II. Moses Wanted More Than Second Hand Religion
Sin was among the people and God would not dwell there. Moses set a tent up outside the camp
That tent was a physical sign of God’s presence and served several purposes. The tent was…
1. A Sacred space - The tent was known as The Tent of Meeting.
2. Settling of disputes - Moses sat as judge and settle disputes as God’s spokesman.
3. Separated - For God to meet with Moses it had to be outside of sinful idolatry.
4. Shielded. Moses entered the tent to meet God, but God would not enter to protect Moses from being consumed.
5. Speaking face to face. God and Moses spoke intimately and alone.
“So the people stood far off, but Moses drew near the thick darkness where God was” Exodus 20:21 NIV
III. Moses Wanted More Than an Angel
Moses reminded God, “You have said, ’I know you by name and you have found favor with me.’ If you are pleased with me, teach me your ways so I may know you and continue to find favor with you. Exodus 33:12-13
“Teach me your way, O LORD, and I will walk in your truth; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name” Psalm 86:11.
Moses would not settle for second-hand guidance by an angel.
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.” (Proverbs 3:5-6)
"Prayer, at its root, is a willingness to let God be God." Dr. Sam Bruce
IV. Show Me Your Glory
In Exodus 33:18-23 makes it clear, when we meet with God He sets the rules.
God covered him in the cleft of a rock to allow him to see just a glimpse of His glory.
God will not dwell among sinful lives He requires holiness as a life style.
Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. James 4:8 NIV
